Reggae New Zealand Style
On January 12, 2002, history was made in New Zealand as Raglan hosted its very first outdoor Eco Reggae Festival, “Soundsplash.” From all over the island, reggae fans came to experience and participate in what was being called ‘a spiritual celebration for the nation….a conscience rhythm for Gaia to resonate.’ Representing the conscience vibes were some of the countries finest Roots/Reggae/Dub artists who kept the people’s spirits high through the lightening, rain, and sunshine for the two-day fest.
Spotlight on Midnite – A Star Rising
October 2002
We live in a world that accepts American hip-hop as authentic but American reggae as flaccid. Sort of like looking for french fries in Chinatown–sure you can find it, but it’s not the best, so why bother? American reggae has had a hard time finding an international audience that deem their music as authentic and as real as Marley, Tosh, or Beenie Man. There are subtle yet reinforced reminders that only real reggae comes from Jamaica, and no other place has the ability to produce talent that competes with the homegrown originals of Jamaican music. The charts, DJs and journalists constantly remind us of whose riddim and whose song is #1 in Jamaica. The award shows always hone in on strictly Jamaican reggae artists and therefore omit a great market and talent that is out there, pumping out great reggae music just the same. The time has come, for the many who thought only good authentic reggae comes from Jamaica– to bite their tongues.

CD Review: Bambu Station, Talkin’ Roots
Bambu Station Studio Presents Various Artists
[Mt. Nebo Records, 2002]
Occasional small bits of good news are necessary for a balanced lifestyle. One such tidbit that gladdened my heart recently was a brief note on Mt. Nebo’s web site, to the effect that there will soon be a second various artists compilation, “Talkin’ Roots II.” To me that’s splendid news because it will likely be as entertaining and uplifting as “Talkin’ Roots I.”. And in the meantime, there are other current albums from Bambu Station Studio to sample.
