Baddis Ting Riddim cd coverIn 1998 when the Baddis Ting riddim hit the scene it really took dancehall by a storm with some hot tracks including ‘Number One’ by Beenie Man, ‘Jacket’ by Mr. Vegas and ‘Bag A Ting’ by General Degree. This riddim was the creation of Richard ‘Shams’ Browne who was then the in house engineer at Main Street Records.

It’s now official! The Grammy nominees were announced December 9 at Gotham Hall in New York City, and glancing at the competitors, the only thing we can say is that ‘the running is tough!’

In the Best Reggae Album (vocal or instrumental) category, the contenders are Burning Spear, ‘Our Music’; Damian Marley, ‘Welcome To Jamrock’; Sean Paul, ‘The Trinity’; Shaggy, ‘Clothes Drop’ and Third World with their album ‘Black, Green & Gold’.

Clinton Gayle born and grew up in Old Braeton in Portmore, St. Catherine. His stage name, King Prof, was derived from a family friend who thought that young Clinton was exceptionally bright for a 9-year-old.

Junior Kelly recently released his latest album “Tough Life.” The VP Records project comes chockful of enjoyable songs. Among the tracks are ‘Rasta Should Be Deeper’, ‘Touch My Heart’, ‘Hold The Faith’ and Receive’ (which is sitting pretty on the local and overseas charts).

Tempo logoThe Caribbean will have a very powerful vehicle to promote its music in the form of MTV’s newest channel, Tempo, which will begin broadcasting in October 2005 in select Caribbean territories through a distribution deal with Innovative TV based in St. Croix in the US Virgin Islands.

The 24-hour English language channel will broadcast a wide range of Caribbean lifestyle programming including food, sports and music.

Old Dawg ­ From Beenie Man’s popular song ‘Old Dawg’ you could probably guess the meaning of this one and you would be right. A man who cheats a lot and takes pleasure in having girls in droves is referred to as ‘old dawg’.

“A whey di rhatid yuh a sey!” – I’m sure a lot of you guys don’t have a clue what this one means. You will encounter this expression when you have just delivered shocking news to a Jamaican. As a means of expressing shock and disbelief they will burst out passionately, “A whey di rhatid yuh a sey!”
