The announcement by Prime Minister P.J. Patterson of the government’s major budgetary allocation for inner city development was welcomed. It is also very good to see that this is an initiative for which there is support from the opposition Jamaica Labour Party.

August this year will mark 15 years since IRIE FM, the world’s first 24/7-reggae radio station, commenced broadcasting from studios at the Grove Music Complex in Ocho Rios, Jamaica. Many regard the birth of IRIE FM as the most significant development in the promotion of reggae music. One thing is for sure; the business of Jamaican music must now be taken very seriously based on the phenomenal success of this station.

Most music business experts will tell you that a good song is the foundation for the commercial success of a recording. The business of music publishing, which deals with the management and exploitation of the copyrights in songs, is also one of the most lucrative aspects of the business of music. Good songs will always be covered by other artistes, resulting in additional income for the songwriters. In my opinion there are three key ingredients to a good song from a commercial standpoint.
