Reflections on Tunisia

Mohamed Bouazizi of Tunisia

Mohamed Bouazizi of Tunisia

I personally was thinking that Mr. Bouazizi should receive the Nobel Peace Prize (he will not though – the Nobel Prize committee cannot award prizes posthumously). His action of protest, while self-destructive, forcefully yet peacefully called the world’s attention to the plight of his fellow citizens. His death inspired fellow Tunisians to take to the streets and push their corrupt ruler out of power.

Music’s Role in Jamaica’s Inner City Development

5/21/05

The announcement by Prime Minister P.J. Patterson of the government’s major budgetary allocation for inner city development was welcomed. It is also very good to see that this is an initiative for which there is support from the opposition Jamaica Labour Party.

Queens of Africa

By Paliani-Gomani Chinguwo

Queen Amina of ZariaI now reminisce that were it not for my dire quest for profundity in African studies as part of my extra-curricular knowledge, I would possibly have been very ignorant of the prowess, glory, splendor, greatness, charm, might and valiance displayed by key women of African descent whom I refer to as the “Queens of the Mother Continent.” Though it seems posterity has almost thrown them into oblivion, their names will never be erased from the pages of history. To quote one of the great sons of Africa, Nelson Mandela, “A history of the people may be distorted but it can never be destroyed!”

Projections and Erections

As soon as I got home internet access the sexual spam began: endless ads offering pills to enlarge my penis, and varieties of black market Viagra and latter-day rhino horn potions. There was also the occasional ad offering various means of increasing breast size.

The Harsh Reality of Rape

“Rape is the only crime in which the victim is doubly violated, first by the attacker, and then by society. It is the only crime in which social, religious, and cultural core attitudes of society turn upon the victim. In rape society tends to blame or accuse the women.” – Rape: The First Sourcebook for Women

Remove the U.S. Trade Embargo on Cuba

By M. Readah

Note: In a near-unanimous voice the United Nations (UN) General Assembly called on the United States on Tuesday, November 12 to end its 42-year embargo against Cuba. US policy-makers are still not convinced and are asking the question of whether the embargo is an appropriate foreign policy instrument for achieving national goals. The Cuban government estimates the negative effect of the blockade at more than $67 billion. The article that follows was written prior to the Nov. 12 UN meeting.
